Council Budget Update Report to Salford City UNISON Branch Committee. January 2011

PUBLIC SPENDING CUTS UPDATE

Here are some vital bits of information around the on-going talks and plans of the branch regarding the employers proposals. This is additional to Bulletin No1 which will follow this shortly.

The Branch is supporting two lobbies of the City Council. 1 on Monday 17th  January  at 5.30pm as the Labour Group meets, and 2 on Wednesday the 19th  January at 8.30am as the Budget Scrutiny Committee prepares to meet. I urge members of UNISON to support both of these events in large numbers to send a clear message against the cuts.

The Branch is also considering the hiring of a coach to take members to the London march against the cuts on Saturday 26th March. This march is organised by the TUC in liaison with all public sector unions and will be the biggest opportunity to express our anger at the ConDem Cuts. If any member wants to be booked into a seat on the coach call the office and leave the information with either Elaine or Annette our support staff. Bookings will be first come first served basis. We will keep a record and contact you nearer the date with additional details. The TUC have booked a train which will be limited as it would be for all the unions and not just one.

I have already visited a number of members at workplace meeting which is being encouraged by UNISON nationally. I have spoken to Members at Turnpike House and Emerson House. If any rep or member wants to organise a meeting at their workplace I will do all I can to make myself available, however please note that my diary will fill up with other meetings that I need to do and I cannot guarantee the time and date that you may of first hoped for. We have sent out to all reps publicity materials against the cuts from the national office and include stickers, Car stickers, leaflet and a limited number of plastic unison card wallets. There are still some available and members are welcome if you call the office beforehand to pop in and take what stock we have.

The Branch web site will soon be updated with this and other information.

As part of the branch’s campaign against the cuts we are urging all members to write to their respective Councillors and MP’s at the damage the ConDem Public Spending Review will be brought upon the vast majority of working class communities and our members. This can be used in line with the draft  letter.
